Mobilizing Commercial Finance to Achieve Universal Energy Access Across Sub-Saharan Africa

HOSTS:

The Global Impact Investing Network,

United States Agency for International Development

Despite promising market growth in the off-grid solar sector, only 65% of households across sub-Saharan Africa are projected to have electricity by 2030, leaving over 100 million households without access. Closing this gap will require a minimum $33 billion in capital above and beyond the market’s current investment trajectory.

This workshop, co-hosted by USAID’s Scaling Off-Grid Energy team and the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN), will be a participatory session highlighting new blended finance instruments coming online this year in order to address this capital gap. Structured as bridge vehicles between the off-grid solar market and traditional institutional investors, these facilities aim to unlock critical capital previously inaccessible to the market.

This session is a collaboration between USAID's Scaling Off-Grid Energy Grand Challenge for Development and GIIN’s Climate Investing and Blended Finance Working Groups, convening key investors, blended finance experts, and clean energy industry leaders, to explore a series of financial structures and instruments that could readily deploy the catalytic capital needed to unlock the missing commercial capital needed in the sector.
